“Resilience is not the survival of the strongest but survival of the fittest, large or small!”
Working in a volatile environment and developing an approach toward resilience is critical for both the organisation and its employees.
What is resilience and why is it important? Did you know that resilience can be developed and there is a way to measure it?
Psychological resilience is an individual's ability to adapt in the face of adverse conditions. Psychological resilience exists in people who develop psychological and behavioral capabilities that allow them to remain calm during crises and chaos so that they can move on from the incident without long-term negative consequences. Resilience (organizational), the ability of a system to withstand changes in its environment and still function.
Our behavior and reactions to challenges and changes are very personal and unique. When we are faced with adverse situation, we may approach it in a different way. Some people get upset, others erupt with anger and get overwhelmed with emotions. Sometimes people distance themselves from other people, blame others for issues and can feel both disoriented and isolated.
Can you remember a situation when you were faced with the challenge? Did you observe what is your current way of coping with the issues? Did you notice any patterns in your behaviors?
In this time of tremendous disruption and uncertainty, knowing your resilience profile can help you navigate the change with awareness and develop your resilience capacity to be able to cope with setbacks in a more positive way. You can also develop the capacity and capability to help others manage change.
Do you agree that with each new change it become easier to adapt?
Many studies demonstrate that psychological resilience can help you deal with challenge and change. Resilience is a capacity comprised of strategies that can be enhanced. Based on the theory of neuroplasticity, your brain can be developed through focus and concentrated effort. There are different ways to build resilience, but it is important to understand what the areas are you need to focus based on your unique circumstances.
“83% of employees polled thought they had high levels of mental and emotional resilience, however only 57% in reality scored as resilient” and this number can be even lower in the companies managed by fear where adversity creates additional stress.
What implications does individual resilience have for organizations?
When employees are challenged with too many changes, their potential is locked, they are unable to demonstrate their true abilities and perform at their peak. Employees enter a ‘survival state” forming silos, acting defensively to protect their borders and unable to communicate effectively which has a negative impact on the overall organizational effectiveness, collaboration and profitability. Absenteeism can increase reducing overall productivity and performance as stress becomes distress.
But there is good news. Research has shown that high levels of resilience can deliver positive outcomes for individuals and organizations where they work, helping people to recover from problems faster, reduce stress, improve job performance, develop positive attitudes, and sustain high levels of well-being and happiness at work. Resilient companies do better at the outset of downturns and after.
This is especially relevant during the current COVID crisis as resilience can help employees contribute to their organization through their proactive behaviors, proficiency, adaptability, and proactivity.
